Strategy 2: Visualising — Activity 1

Sensory Scenes

Individual 20–30 minutes

Overview

Students annotate a text extract for sensory details across all five senses, then complete a graphic organiser with a drawing of the scene at the centre (sight) and written descriptions for sounds, smells, tastes and textures in surrounding sections. Different interpretations lead to rich class discussion about why readers form different impressions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Distribute the text extract. Read it aloud as a class or have students read independently.
  2. Students annotate the extract, highlighting words and phrases that evoke sensory details.
  3. Using the graphic organiser, students draw what they "see" in the scene in the central box.
  4. In the surrounding sections, students describe the sounds, smells, tastes and textures they imagine from the text.
  5. Students may optionally attach a physical material sample for the texture section.
  6. Students share their completed scenes in pairs, discussing similarities and differences in their interpretations.
  7. Facilitate a class discussion: Why do different readers visualise the same text differently?

Tips

  • Reassure students that drawing skill doesn't matter — the goal is to engage with the text, not to produce artwork.
  • Encourage students to go beyond what is explicitly stated and infer sensory details.
  • This activity pairs well with any narrative or descriptive passage.
