About the book
Practical Reading Strategies pulls together over a decade of learning in the English classroom. Developed through a research partnership with the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (VATE), the book provides a framework of six reading strategies — each with four unique, classroom-tested activities — designed to develop the complex skills involved in reading.
The strategies are not hierarchical, but there is logic to their order. They move from activating prior knowledge (Making Connections) through to creating new understanding (Synthesising), mirroring the cognitive progression of Bloom's taxonomy. Each activity includes detailed teacher instructions, concise student handouts, real student examples, reflection prompts, and extension ideas.
Part Two of the book expands the strategies from individual activities into unit planning, folio-based assessment, curriculum development, cross-curricular literacy, and whole-school reading culture — giving teachers, faculty heads, and school leaders a complete toolkit for transforming reading instruction.
